A Shelby County husband and father has been found guilty in the slaying of his longtime friend who was shot multiple times in the stairwell of her Highland Lakes home in 2016 and found dead by her young son.

After only one hour of deliberation Tuesday, the jury convicted 39-year-old Adam Michael Burrus in the murder of Connie Woolweaver, a beloved mother of two. Investigators found nine shell casings and eight bullet fragments near her body and said one of the shots entered through the back of her head and exited through her eye.

Woolweaver, according to testimony, had loaned Burrus a total of $176,000 and was calling in those loans. A week before her death, Woolweaver text messaged a friend, saying she was not going to talk with Burrus until he repaid her. Burrus had repaid her about $47,000, of which $43,000 was borrowed from a bank.

Shelby County authorities earlier this year indicted Burrus on mortgage fraud. It is not clear if that indictment is related to the $43,000 loan.

Burrus, prosecutors said, was feeling the pressure and saw killing Woolweaver as a means of escaping his money problems. “If you take care of Connie Woolweaver, you take care of the debt,’’ said Shelby County Assistant District Attorney Daniel McBrayer.

A 58-year-old taxi driver killed himself in his Queens home this month, marking the eight suicide in the taxi industry this year. The suicide was confirmed by the NYC Medical Examiner on Wednesday, just as the City Council passed bills to give counseling to taxi drivers facing financial and mental health issues.

The Medical Examiner confirmed Kim committed suicide in his Bayside home on November 5th, the Post reports, adding that "Kim, who had just purchased his taxi medallion last year, was more than $500,000 in debt from the deal and struggling to stay afloat." His friend, taxi driver Young Lee, told the tabloid, "He was in a lot of debt from that. For a while he was making money but then it just went slowly down and down and down. All drivers are really struggling."

Shanann Watts called her husband “my ROCK!” and the “best dad us girls could ask for” in what appeared to be an idyllic life on social media.

However, behind the scene, it was a different picture that ended with her and her daughters’ lives this week.

Watts and her husband Chris – who is accused of killing her and their two girls – appeared to be in dire financial strain.

Three years ago, they jointly filed for bankruptcy, citing more than $70,000 in debt, KDVR-TV reported.

The couple had a combined income of $90,000 in 2014. But they also had tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt, along with student loans and medical bills — for a total of $70,000 in unsecured claims on top of a sizable mortgage.

They said in the filing their nearly $3,000 monthly mortgage payments and $600 in monthly car payments formed the bulk of their $4,900 in monthly expenses.

On Wednesday, Chris Watts, 33, was arrested and held on three counts of first-degree murder for allegedly killing his 34-year-old wife and their daughters Celeste, 3, and Bella, 4. He was held without bond on Thursday with charges expected Monday.

Chiropractor Glenn Scarpelli and his wife Patricia, ages 53 and 50, are the victims in the early morning suicide.

Glenn Scarpelli had been pursued in federal court over failing to pay back a federal loan issued in 2000 for advanced medical education in 2013, having failed to make most payments over the course of more than a decade.

Public records showed that Glenn owed about $213,000 to the federal government and nearly $42,000 to the state in unpaid taxes dating back to 2003.

Trucks shot himself in front of his wife of 25 years, according to the Daily Mail. Police in West Palm Beach and the group have tried to keep the suicide hidden.

Federal records show the IRS hounded Trucks. Last year, the IRS filed two liens against his $500,000 condo. Trucks had to pay additional taxes for 2013 and 2014 with a total over $540,000.

A decade after the peak of his diabolical, deliberately created housing bubble, the 21st century's most prolific serial killer is still killing.  Less than a month after his most recent murder, Alan Greenspan has killed a married couple in Las Vegas.

An elderly couple who died in a joint suicide faced a recent history of credit card debt and other financial troubles, court records reveal.

Emi and Glen Yamasaki, both 63, were seen driving to the fifth and highest floor of the parking garage at the Silverton Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday night, before they jumped off together, police said.

Discover Bank reached a $15,400 settlement on their credit card debt in early December, and their next-door neighbors sued the couple for $2,400 on December 15, according court records cited by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Court records obtained by the newspaper showed the pair had a history of financial troubles.

Discover Bank filed a complaint against the couple in April, and Emi Yamasaki signed an agreement to make monthly payments of $200 on November 4.

A settlement with the bank was reached, and a judgement of $15,400 was entered against the couple on December 2, according to Clark county District Court records.

The couple had also purchased a home in Sun City Anthem in Henderson, Nevada, in 2005 for about $415,000 - although a filing suggests they were at risk of foreclosure.

This century's most prolific serial killer may have slowed down in his old age, but he still manages a killing on occasion.

Today's episode of Greenspan's Body Count is the sad tale of an old woman alleged murdered for money by her own grandson:

A Texas man accused of murdering his grandmother in her East Dundee home for a share of her inheritance was nearly $162,000 behind on his mortgage and had charged at least $27,100 on her credit card in cash advances in the six months before her death, witnesses testified Friday.

Richard Schmelzer, 44, of Frisco, a Dallas suburb, is charged with fatally stabbing Mildred "Dodie" Darrington in her bed in July 2014.

Schmelzer was $161,715.92 behind on the mortgage when Darrington, 85, was killed. Schmelzer and his wife took out the loan in February 2007 and were in arrears within 18 months, McCarty testified.

A man accused of embezzling more than $1 million from a state education cooperative had tens of thousands of dollars in debt at the time of his death, claims against his estate reveal.

Scott Westerhuis, the former business manager of Mid-Central Educational Cooperative, owed more than $45,000 to a man who remodeled his home, $15,000 for an outstanding credit card and almost $120,000 for unpaid loans on cars, four-wheelers and a boat.

Financial issues appear to have contributed to an educational cooperative business manager’s decision to kill his wife and four children with a shotgun before setting the family home ablaze and then shooting himself, South Dakota’s attorney general said Tuesday.

Attorney General Marty Jackley released the results of his office’s investigation of the September deaths at a news conference in Platte, a few miles north of the burned ruins of the home where the bodies of Scott and Nicole Westerhuis and their children Kailey, Jaeci, Connor and Michael were found.

L’Wren Scott, prominent fashion designer and long-time girlfriend of Mick Jagger, was found dead in an apparent suicide in her New York City apartment on Monday morning. It has been revealed by MailOnline that Scott was “distraught and ‘embarrassed’ over her failing business.” According to MailOnline, L’Wren Scott’s company was $6 million in debt at the time of her suicide. An assistant discovered her body after receiving a text at 8:30 a.m. from Scott requesting her to go over to Scott’s 11th Avenue apartment and let herself in. After hearing about Scott’s death, actress Ellen Barkin and several other close friends went to Scott’s apartment. One friend said that Scott had been avoiding phone calls and had been acting strangely for more than a week.

It's hard to believe that Alan Greenspan is still killing, years after the housing crash and after his successor Zimbabwe Ben has re-inflated the housing bubble.  But the Maestro works in mysterious ways.

Today's episode of Greenspan's Body Count comes from the wealthy town of West Palm Beach.

By 6 p.m. city police confirmed Alexander Berman, 16, and his sister, Jacqueline, 15, had been found dead in the pink house with the basketball net out front. The body of a woman, who police identified as Richard Berman’s ex-wife, was also found in the home.

The three appear to have died from gun shots in a murder-suicide.

“I can’t believe this could happen in our neighborhood, but I guess it could happen anywhere,” said Rod Tinson, a neighbor. “It’s a shame. It’s sickening to hear the teenage kids, too.”

The teens’ mother, Jennifer Berman, 48, sent emails to Richard Berman, her ex-husband and father of the children, and to other members of their family Monday morning, saying she was going to harm either herself or other family members, said Sgt. David Lefont, a city police spokesman.

The home, which records still list the two as owning, has been in the process of foreclosure since 2010. It originally belonged to Jennifer Berman’s mother, according to court records, and had recently been sold. The mother and children were to move out in February.

Zillow shows the home having been sold in 2004 at the deeply discounted price of $101,000. That's likely the family deal purchase from Jennifer Berman's mother or her estate. But the family must have hit the home ATM a little too hard with the value soaring to over $1 million at the peak of Greenspan's bubble.

Police say they have uncovered a critical piece of evidence that is shedding light on what lead to two deaths over the weekend at a Fresno home. The man who police believe shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself left behind a note.

Family members Monday said Harmandeep Singh left a suicide note that was turned over to detectives. While the couple may have seemed to be all smiles around their family, police are finding there were some underlying problems.

Since Saturday, investigators have learned the pair had some financial problems police believe may have contributed to the murder-suicide.

Harmandeep Singh and Karanjit Kaur lived at 6577 West Celeste Avenue in Fresno, purchased for $470,000 in June 2007 and now worth $298,000 despite Bernanke's best efforts to equal Greenspan's bubble-blowing.

I think Charles Schwab and Ken Fisher live there. Probably Larry Ellison too. It's down the peninsula from San Francisco, so convenient for both Frisco banksters and Silicon Valley CEOs.

But garden-variety eight-figure multi-millionaires liver there too. And it is on one of these lesser rich that the wrath of Alan Greenspan descended:

A Woodside man on the brink of financial ruin shot his artist wife twice in the head and staged the bloody bedroom of their mansion to look like a suicide to make good on more than $30 million in life insurance policies that wiped away his debt, according to jurors who found him guilty of first-degree murder for financial gain.

After she survived overdosing on pills in March 2010, Parima Parineh reportedly expressed surprise her husband was still alive, which Finigan said showed she thought the couple had a suicide pact. Peter Parineh later told his son he “missed out” on $30 million dollars. On the stand, Parineh said the comment was meant as sarcasm.

"Hey, honey! Let's both kill ourselves. Tell you what, you go first!"

The financial troubles:

The Parineh family had five properties in foreclosure, a commercial building that had been taken over for lack of payment and its estate once worth tens of millions of dollars had all but disappeared.

Back from a brief speaking engagement in Ireland, serial killer Alan Greenspan fell upon the Harrisburg suburb of York, Pennsylvania Tuesday.

Police in York County released the names and additional details regarding a murder-suicide in Manchester Township earlier Tuesday in which a husband shot and killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself.

Parag Patel, 43, and his wife, Niha Patel, 41, were found dead when officers arrived at their home at 970 Hedgegate Lane just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

The home at 970 Hedgegate was purchased at the height of the bubble in 2008 for $411,224. Zillow now values it at $341,772, though a similar-sized house nearby sold recently for $190,700 and a much larger house immediately across the street sold for $250,000.

This is not the first student debt case on Greenspan's Body Count. There was Thomas J. Fuchs, Jason Yoder, and Otis Beckford. But today's episode of Greenspan's Body Count combines student debt with patricide for financial gain a la Ernest Scheringer.

Meet John Conrad Wagner, a heavily indebted and underemployed lawyer, who was found dead in his Philadelphia home after apparently shooting his mother to death over Christmas in her Florida home.

Oh, and that father-son hiking trip in 2011 where his father "fell" off a cliff... yeah, that's suddenly looking a little suspicious.

"We'll never know his motive," said Marion County Sheriff's Capt. Robert Sandlin. "What is our opinion? Financial. He had a lot of student loans that were outstanding."

Greenspan's Body Count: Phillip Marshall, Alex Marshall, Macaila Marshall

or, the Celebrated Murdering Maestro of Calaveras County.

Calaveras County is in the California gold country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  It was made famous in the Mark Twain short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.

It was not the 19th century gold rush, but the 21st century real estate rush, that brought us today's tragic tale.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office has identified the three people killed in the suspected murder suicide in Murphys.

The body of 54-year-old Phillip Marshall, and his two juvenile children, were found inside their home in the Forest Meadows subdivision yesterday afternoon. All three died from gunshot wounds to the head. The children were 17-year-old Alex Marshall and 14-year-old Macaila Marshall, both students at Bret Harte High School. The family dog was also found dead. The Sheriff's Office believes that Phillip shot his children, and then turned the gun on himself. Phillip's estranged wife, and mother of the two children, was out of town at the time of the shootings. 

The home at 1259 Sandalwood Drive was purchased in 2004 for $584,000.  It is now worth $344,616 according to Zillow.

Greenspan's Body Count: Hans Walters, Kathryn Walters, and child

The real estate wasteland of Las Vegas has been a favored hunting ground of serial killer Alan Greenspan. Today's episode of Greenspan's Body Count comes from the Las Vegas suburb of Boulder City:

A Las Vegas police lieutenant and two family members are dead after an apparent double murder, suicide and arson at a home in Boulder City, authorities said Monday.

Henderson police spokesman Keith Paul said a man called 911 at about 8:20 a.m. Monday and told a dispatcher he killed his wife and child, set his house afire and would shoot anyone who approached.

The home is owned by Hans Walters, according to Clark County assessor records. Many know Walters as a Las Vegas police lieutenant married to a former Las Vegas police officer, Kathryn Walters. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that she left the department in 2005.

Boulder City police arrived to find the homeowner with a handgun in the doorway of the burning house before he retreated back inside and apparently killed himself.

Hans Walter bought the home at 1313 Esther Drive near the peak of the bubble in 2005 for $305,000. Zillow currently values the house at $155,124.

Greenspan's Body Count: 69667 Northhampton Avenue, Cathedral City

Cathedral City is near Palm Springs, an oasis in the desert east of California's Inland Empire, the #2 most depressing place in America.

And it was the last place three people saw yesterday. AP:

Three people were found shot to death in a Riverside County home and investigators suspect a double murder-suicide.

Cathedral City Police Lt. Charles Robinson says officers were called to the house in Cathedral City late Wednesday morning.

They discovered a woman and her adult daughter shot to death in a bed. In another bedroom, the body of the older woman's common-law husband was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The home was purchased in March 2003 for $170,000, was Zillowed up to $399,000 in the bubble, and is now back to $175,000.

But lookie here.  The tax assessment jumped by $106,000 in 2007.  Because of California's Prop 13, you only get a jump like that if you make major improvements to the house.  It looks like these guys did a major remodel, likely funded with a home equity suckout.  That would have left them deeply underwater after the crash.

And it looks like this double-murder-suicide came down to a broke man angry over not getting enough of his dying wife's assets.

Investigators say the woman had been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, and her common-law husband was upset over her plans to divide her assets after her death.

The daughter was visiting from Florida to help put her mother's affairs in order.

Killing over the assets of the dying, murdering for the last scraps in a desperate America.  That's what the  Greenspan-Bernanke Fed have brought us to.
